It’s a simple question; or is it? When do you replace your locks? Unfortunately, there’s no one-size fits all answer as each circumstance is different! We are often asked this question and our answer is always the same; “that depends!” While at first, this sounds like a real cop-out, it in fact, is not. Atlanta, GA is a big community and if you think about it; each resident can count dozens if not hundreds of locks in their daily lives. This includes locks at home, at work, at their place of business, in their car or wherever they shop. Locks are everywhere and each one meets different needs and fills different security requirements.
We hear this phrase a lot. People who have lost their keys or have experienced a skipped out tenant often say that they must have the locks changed. What does this really mean? Sometimes they imply that totally new locks are needed and other times they are referring to lock rekeys. There is much confusion between the two tasks so we are going to clarify things a bit.
An actual lock change out is exactly that. You take the original lock and remove it. This service typically costs more than a rekey where the lock is left in place. The full change out offers a few benefits of its own. Firstly, you have to use new keys with this lock. That means that all old copies are now useless and anyone having an authorized or unauthorized copy can no longer use it. Secondly, if your previous lock was a damaged or older piece of hardware, the new lock may be stronger, better installed and offer greater lock security. The third benefit of having totally new locks is peace of mind. Just knowing that you now have new lock hardware in place that requires new keys is often enough to add real comfort to the consumer.
So why would anyone choose a rekey job over full lock replacement? Believe it or not, there are real benefits to having your lock rekeyed instead of full replacement. The first and most obvious benefit is cost. During a lock rekey, the lock stays in place and your locksmith alters the inside pins and springs. The end result is that new keys are now needed and all original keys in use are now useless. Rekeys are not as expensive as a lock change-out. Not only can you save money, but rekeys can also provide another benefit; removal of master pins. These master pins were in place when the original property was sold. The contractor used master pin loaded locks so that contractors like plumbers, dry wall and painters could all access the property with one key. Later, these locks were converted over to non-master locks once the new owner used his key. Unfortunately, the master pins remained inside and while the possibility of anyone accessing the property strictly due to their presence, these pins do weaken the lock and over time, this can lead to lock failure and then full replacement will be required. Your locksmith can check your lock for these master pins and if any are found, remove them completely during the actual rekey process.
Have you ever thought about who REALLY has a copy of your house, rental, or office key? Think back. The list can include the original builder and his contractors like painters, plumbers, dry wall, plasterers, roofers, realtors, loan officers, decorators, landscapers, electricians, and dozens more. Then all the different buyers, renters, dog walkers, babysitters, guests, family members, friends, property managers and on and on! While this does not mean that each and every one of them still has a key copy, it also doesn’t mean that they don’t! Not only is the possibility of extra copies in circulation pretty good but the legitimate keys that are being used now are worn and are contributing to lock wear and tear.
A lock is a lock is a lock. Not really. Locks come in dozens of styles, materials and forms. Some are cheap and flimsy and others more sturdily built and installed. Greater expense does not necessarily mean better locks. If you are thinking of upgrading your home, auto or business locks, we highly recommend speaking to a local, full service locksmith that is established, licensed, bonded and insured. A true lock professional will be able to access your lock situation and recommend the proper lock brands and hardware for your enhanced security and budget requirements.
While your present lock may be adequate, it may not offer ultimate protection. Locks, like anything else, age and become worn. If you are serious about maximum lock security and use, consult with your locksmith professional about the quality of the locks you now have installed at your property. He or she will be able to assess its usefulness and locking ability and recommend the proper lock upgrade options.
